There are so many brands of cat litter that is currently available out there, it could sometimes be very confusing to choose the right one. But to make things a little easier, majority out there are made basically from 4 different types of material and we going to run through those, as well as the difference between clumping and non-clumping.
Clumping
Simply as the name suggest when your cat has used the litter box the liquid will be solidified and joined together, making it easy to clean up only the section that needs to be replaced, hence you would only need to replace the full box of litter once a month.
Non-Clumping
Again as the name suggest this will not clump together when your cat uses it, but has a great benefit of hiding unwanted smells very well. The downfall is that non-clumping litter should ideally be be replaced between 5 and 12 days, best always to check with the brand you choose.
Paper based
So these are always a great biodegradable product, making it eco friendly. Paper based litter will in most cases be a a super absorbable product, so will hide odors very well, and dust free. Depending on your method of disposing, in most countries due to it been biodegradable you would be able to flush it, and it’s non-clumping. An example of this is Marltons Eco-Wood Litter.
Crystal or Silicone based
These based litters are really absorbent and dust-free, and other cases are scented. Majority of the time I find these to have strange colours and shapes seeing that its “man-made”. They don’t generally clump, and due to the great odor absorbent material it covers those unwanted smells very well. But the downside would be that its not bio-degradable hence not flushable, and can cause tracking on your cats feet. An Example would be Marltons Crystal Litter.
Corn & Vegetable Based
Once again these a very absorbent and Clump quickly, and form “harder” clumping, but does require regular removal, but much less 100% replacement than regular litter. Because of it been a food based litter it is bio-degradable and hides odor fairly well, as well as not much dust. but always check as sometime if your cat is greedy, they try eating the litter. An example of this litter would be Kit Cat Soya Clump litter.
Clay Based
This is probably the most natural type of litter your cat could use, it does clump well, but dust have dust. it can easily be composted. It does cover some odor but it’s not the best odor cover. Being natural does mean less tray cleaning. An example of this litter would be Amercalitter or Complete cat litter.
With all this information to choose from it does make choosing the right one difficult, so why not try different ones until you find the right one that suits both you and your cat, after all the litter is for your cat….. But I agree it should be a win win situation.
